The first question that arises now is which filter is the best for your swimming pool?
There are basically three main types of filter systems - Sand Filters, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters and Cartridge Filters. Each of these is available in different sizes and what you choose depends on the size of your swimming pool. It is very difficult to say which filter is the best, as each filter has its own merits and demerits.
- Sand filter is a great choice if you want a bullet proof swimming pool.
- If you want a maintenance free or low maintenance filter, opt for cartridge filter.
- Experts say that you get the cleanest water when you have DE filter. Infact, you can install DE filter to sand or cartridge filter so that more debris can be filtered out easily.
- All the three types of swimming pool filters work in their own best way. For better performance, of course better maintenance is called for.
The next question that arises is how often should you clean your pool filters?
This of course depends on the type of filter installed in your pool. The thumb rule is clean the pool filter when the pressure rises about 10 psi. You know that your filter needs to be cleaned or replaced when it is clogged with debris. You get to know this when the back pressure rises and the overall flow rate of the pool drops.
Sand Filters: The sand in the sand filter should be changed every 5 to 7 years since it cleans the water through sand.
Cartridge Filters: Such type of swimming pool filters are very easy to maintain. They are comparatively less expensive. But for proper maintenance of your swimming pool, cartridge filters should be cleaned few times per season and should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. This ensures a clean and sparkling pool all the year round.
DE Filters: Such filters need to be back-washed when the pressure becomes high. Back-washing and replacing DE should be done once or twice a year.
